Calgary's Premier Garden Centre & Tree Farm
Countryside Tree Farms & Landscaping, 30 years of Alberta-grown excellence. Your one-stop destination for trees, shrubs, perennials, greenhouse plants, lavender, artisan gifts, and award-winning landscape design.
Looking for a Calgary garden centre with deep roots in Alberta's soil? Countryside Tree Farms & Landscaping, located just 10 minutes south of Calgary in De Winton, has been growing and selling climate-adapted trees, shrubs, and plants for over 30 years, making it Southern Alberta's most trusted tree farm and garden centre destination.
Unlike big-box garden centres that stock mass-produced plants from distant climates, Countryside actually grows its own trees right here in Alberta. That means every spruce, poplar, crabapple, and maple you purchase has already proven it can survive Calgary's chinooks, temperature swings, and short growing season before it ever reaches your yard.
Why Choose Countryside, Calgary's Garden Centre with a Difference
When Calgary gardeners search for a garden centre near Calgary, they typically find a range of options, from large chain nurseries to smaller neighbourhood shops. What sets Countryside Tree Farms apart is its unique identity: it is a working tree farm that opened its gates to the public, not a retail store that buys in plant stock.
Founded in 1996 as a landscape design and construction company, Countryside grew into a tree farm when the team couldn't find large, hardy, healthy plant material that matched Alberta's demanding climate. The solution? Grow their own. What began as a practical necessity evolved into one of the most complete garden centre experiences in Western Canada; A place where you can walk the tree rows, hand-select a mature specimen, browse a full greenhouse, pick up artisan gifts, and book a landscape consultation, all in one visit.

Planting Guide for Calgary's Climate
Even the hardiest Alberta-grown trees need the right start to thrive in Calgary's demanding climate. Here are the key steps Countryside recommends for every new tree or shrub planting, distilled from 30 years of growing and landscape expertise.
Choose the Right Plant for Your Zone
All Countryside plants are labelled with hardiness zone ratings. In Calgary (Zone 3-4), match the plant's zone to your specific microclimate, south-facing walls are warmer; north-facing corners are colder.
Prepare the Soil First
Alberta prairie soils can be compacted and alkaline. Before planting, add compost, organic matter, and COUNTRYSIDE Soil Amender, the same 4-ingredient blend used on Countryside's own farm fields.
Plant at the Right Time
Best planting windows in Calgary: spring (May-June) and early fall (September-early October). Pre-ordering ensures your trees are ready exactly when conditions are optimal for establishment.
Water Deeply, Not Frequently
New trees need 1-3 slow, deep waterings per week for the first month. The rule: 1 gallon per 25mm of trunk caliper per week. Water should penetrate 8-12 inches deep. A slow hose trickle for 4-5 hours beats a quick spray every time.
Mulch Around the Base
Apply 2-4 inches of bark mulch in a 2-3 ft diameter circle around the trunk (pulled back from the trunk itself). Mulch moderates soil temperature during chinooks, retains moisture, and suppresses weeds.
Fertilize at Planting
Apply COUNTRYSIDE Root Fertilizer 10-30-10 at planting time to stimulate root establishment. Avoid fertilizing after late August to prevent frost damage to new growth.
Be Patient, Establishment Takes Time
Even the most drought-tolerant Alberta natives need regular watering for 2-3 years until fully established. This is the most common reason trees fail, skipping the establishment watering phase.

Hardy, cold-tolerant species perform best: Colorado Spruce, Columnar Spruce, Swedish Columnar Aspen, Northwest Poplar, Green Ash, Manchurian Ash, Crabapple, Siberian Larch, Mayday, and Caragana. Countryside specializes in Alberta-adapted Chinook zone varieties with 30 years of proven local performance.
For year-round privacy, Colorado Spruce or Columnar Spruce are the top choices. For a fast-growing deciduous screen, Swedish Columnar Aspen is extremely popular. For fastest overall growth, Northwest Poplar and Countryside's proprietary Sundancer Poplar establish quickly. Staff can advise on spacing and sizing for your specific property layout.
The two best planting windows in Calgary are spring (May–June) and early fall (September–early October). Pre-ordering trees December–March guarantees availability during these windows and saves 30–50% off regular prices.
