What is Jostaberry?
The Jostaberry is a cross between blackcurrant and gooseberry. This is a unique and flavorful fruit that has a great taste, nutritional benefits as well as easy to grow.
The Jostaberries are nearly black, glossy fruits, larger than blackcurrents but smaler than gooseberries, typically growing up to 10mm in diameter. They start green, turn red and ripen to a deep violet-black. The flavour is a balanced blend of tart gooseberry and sweet blackcurrant, becoming sweeter as they ripen.
Similar to many other fruits the Jostaberry provides many nutritional benefits. They are rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin K, B vitamins and antioxidants like anthocyanins, which help combat oxidative stress. A 100g serving provides approximately 48kcal, 0.8g protein and 0.5g fat.
Now how can you grow these berries? Well they are very hardy tolerating temperatures up to -40ºC in Alberta. They prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. The best time to plant is during dormancy, from late autumn to mid-spring. When planting ensure to leave 1.5m between other plants to allow for proper growth. After planting Jostaberries are self-fertile and require minimal maintenance. They are resistant to common diseases like mildew and lead spots. Prune annually in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage fruiting.
Jostaberries typically begin producing fruit in their second year, with full yields by the third. Each plant can yield 10-12lbs of fruit per season. The berries are excellent for fresh eating, jams, jellies and freezing. They also make flavourful additions to juices and desserts.
In conclusion Jostaberries are a delightful addition to any garden, offering flavor profile, nutritional benefits and ease of cultivation. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, these berries are worth considering for your planting season. A unique cross between a blackcurrant and gooseberry!
