Description: Often considered the ‘original’ daylily, this diploid Hemerocallis species is now almost difficult to find for purchase, having been mainly replaced by the showy tetraploid daylily hybrids. Native to Asia but naturalized in many parts of Europe and North America, the plant has many common names referring to its tawny orange blooms.
Ornamental Features: With thinner petals than other daylilies, these large, 6″ blooms in shades of orange look almost star-like. Slightly recurved petals show off petal markings in a rich pumpkin shade, while the throats have a golden glow. Excellent for naturalizing difficult areas or for a low maintenance ground cover.
Landscape Features: An ideal, low maintenance choice for shrub and perennial borders or as ground cover on slopes. Attracts beneficial pollinators, and is ignored by deer and rabbits. Very cold hardy, but able to tolerate considerable heat stress and drought. Note that this is a plant that spreads through underground rhizomes, so allow it plenty of space to fill in.
