Description: ‘Blackhawks’ is an exciting stand-out cultivar of Andropogon, also known as big bluestem grass. The upright foliage starts out dark green but begins to turn purple in August as nights cool and is nearly black by late September.
Ornamental Features: Provides height, texture, and unique colour in the garden. Foliage emerges dark green with purple accents. As the season progresses, the colour deepens as the nights become cooler. In midsummer, tall spikes of purplish, three-fingered flowers emerge.
Landscape Attributes: Tolerant of a wide range of soils and growing conditions. This grass is somewhat slow to establish, but has excellent drought tolerance and is easy to maintain. Cut stems to the ground in late winter before new shoots appear.
